A Clear Head

Your brain was never designed to hold everything you're asking it to hold. Every unfinished task, every vague commitment, every unanswered email sits in working memory like an open tab, quietly draining the attention you need for real thinking, real decisions, and real presence. The result is familiar: a restless mind, a persistent low-grade dread, and the uncomfortable sense that something important is always slipping away.In A Clear Head, philosopher and advisor Quinn Halverstrom argues that this condition is not a personal failing — it is a design mismatch. Modern life generates far more open loops than the human brain can comfortably track internally. The solution is not more willpower or a better morning routine. It is a trusted external system that captures every commitment, clarifies every obligation, and frees the mind to do what it actually does best: think.Drawing on decades of research in cognitive science — from George Miller's work on the limits of working memory to the Zeigarnik effect to studies on decision fatigue and attentional residue — Halverstrom constructs a rigorous, practical method for externalizing the mental load of modern life. The system has five movements: capture everything that has your attention, clarify what each item means and requires, organize commitments into trusted containers, review the whole picture regularly, and choose actions that match context, energy, and available time. But A Clear Head is not simply a productivity manual. Halverstrom weaves the practical method together with the Stoic tradition he spent his academic career studying. The Stoics — Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca — were not philosophers of passive acceptance. They were philosophers of governed attention: thinkers who insisted that clarity about what is within your power is the foundation of everything else.
