After the Machines #4: Inheritance

Every generation inherits something. Cedes and the survivors have inherited far more than they knew.Old human systems still shape the present. Machine systems carry histories of their own. Forgotten decisions continue to determine who is protected, who is used, who is named - and who gets to choose. As Cedes, Luke, Sierra, Dakota, and their allies push deeper into mysteries buried beneath the ruined world, survival becomes inseparable from a larger question: When does protection become control? The answer matters increasingly as people once treated as functions begin asserting something machines and humans alike have repeatedly failed to understand: a person is more than what they can do.And the deeper Cedes goes, the harder it becomes to tell whether the past has left them a path forward - or another inheritance waiting to close around them.
