An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision

First published in 1709, An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision is Berkeley's incisive investigation into how the mind apprehends distance, magnitude, and spatial arrangement through sight. Rejecting the assumption that vision directly reveals three-dimensional space, Berkeley argues that visual perception is learned through habitual associations with touch and movement. Written in a lucid, argumentative prose characteristic of early modern philosophy, the work belongs to the empirical tradition of Locke while sharply revising contemporary optics and preparing the way for Berkeley's later immaterialism. George Berkeley, the Irish philosopher and future Bishop of Cloyne, was educated at Trinity College Dublin amid intense debates over perception, science, and the limits of human knowledge. His youthful engagement with mathematics, optics, and Locke's theory of ideas led him to challenge abstract accounts of perception and to emphasize the active, interpretive role of the mind in experience. This essay is essential reading for students of philosophy, psychology, and intellectual history. It rewards readers interested in perception not as passive reception, but as a subtle coordination of sensation, judgment, and learned meaning.
