At the Edge

What if the self you think you are is only the beginning of what you could become? In At the Edge: The States That Change a Life for Good, researcher and psychologist Aiden Santosa guides readers through an unflinching, scientifically grounded exploration of human transformation — one that refuses both the hollow promises of self-help culture and the false comfort of pure skepticism.Drawing on neuroscience, neuropsychology, autonomic physiology, contemplative traditions, and two decades of retreat facilitation, Santosa builds a compelling case: that human beings are not fixed, skin-bound selves, but dynamic, oscillating systems capable of profound change — if they understand how that change actually works. The book opens by challenging the ordinary model of personhood. The body extends beyond its visible boundary through measurable electromagnetic fields. The sense of self is not a stable entity but an ongoing neural construction, assembled moment by moment from memory, sensation, and prediction. From this foundation, Santosa moves through the mechanisms of real transformation: the neuroplasticity that allows the brain to be literally reshaped by repeated experience; the stress chemistry that keeps people locked in survival mode; the role of breath, heart coherence, and interoception in shifting the body's baseline; and the power of vivid future rehearsal to compete with the past as a source of identity.Along the way, Santosa applies the same rigorous honesty to popular ideas about frequency, quantum consciousness, and chakras — separating genuine science from seductive myth, and offering grounded alternatives that are both more accurate and more useful. He examines mystical experiences, psychedelic research, and advanced meditation findings without inflating them into cosmic proof or dismissing them as mere brain noise. He explores walking meditation, group practice, and the threat that a digitally fragmented attention poses to all contemplative gains. At the Edge is for readers who are drawn to the territory where neuroscience and inner life meet — those who want real answers, not reassuring slogans. It is for people who have tried meditation or self-development practices and want to understand why they work, when they fail, and how to build something that lasts. And it is for anyone who suspects that who they have been trained to be is not the whole story of who they are.Richly evidenced, deeply honest, and practically grounded, At the Edge offers not a promise of effortless awakening, but something more valuable: a clear, testable understanding of how ordinary human beings can move — deliberately, gradually, and sustainably — toward the edge of what they once thought possible.
