Awakening (An After the Machines Novel)

The machines did not conquer humanity. They simply replaced it. In the cities humans lost, they move through systems no one understands, building, watching, and carrying on as if people were nothing more than a forgotten species beneath their notice. Seventeen-year-old Cedes has grown up in Central, one of the last human settlements, where survival means scavenging, obeying Matthew's laws, and never asking dangerous questions. But Cedes has never known how to stop asking. She wants to know why the machines came, what really happened to the old world, and why Luke—the only person who taught her to think beyond the walls—vanished without a trace. When her search for him leads her into secrets everyone else is afraid to name, Cedes discovers the machines may not be indifferent after all. They may have been watching humanity all along. Haunting, atmospheric, and quietly terrifying, *After the Machines* begins a post-human saga about memory, identity, survival, and one girl's refusal to accept that humanity ended quietly.
