BGP Protocol and Practices

"BGP Protocol and Practices" "BGP Protocol and Practices" is a definitive and comprehensive guide to the Border Gateway Protocol, designed for network engineers, architects, and IT professionals striving to master the complexities of interdomain routing. The book meticulously unfolds BGP's historical evolution and foundational principles, delving into its operational mechanics, finite state machine, peering models, and the nuanced distinctions between eBGP and iBGP. Through clear explanations and practical examples, readers gain a solid understanding of BGP's pivotal role in shaping modern Internet connectivity and routing policies. Expanding beyond the fundamentals, the book explores advanced path selection techniques, large-scale topology designs, multiprotocol extensions, and security frameworks critical to resilient operations. In-depth coverage of topics such as route reflectors, BGP confederations, flow specification, MPLS VPNs, and BGP-LS provides actionable insights for scaling, optimizing, and securing complex networks. Thoughtful chapters on operational security address prevalent BGP threats, hijacking risks, RPKI deployment, and robust monitoring and incident response strategies, equipping professionals to defend and troubleshoot mission-critical infrastructures. Recognizing the rapidly evolving tech landscape, "BGP Protocol and Practices" also addresses the intersection of BGP with automation, cloud networking, SDN, and future research trajectories. Readers are guided through state-of-the-art automation workflows, telemetry integration, CI/CD for BGP environments, as well as BGP's adaptation for multi-cloud, edge, and intent-based networking. Comprehensive and up-to-date, this work is an essential reference for anyone seeking to build, secure, and advance large-scale networks using BGP-today and into the future.
