Can't I Just Want Something More? A Career Change Guide for People Who Aren't Starting from Scratch

Can't I Just Want Something More? is a thoughtful, practical guide for adults who feel ready for change but unsure how to begin-especially when walking away from a long-established career feels risky, confusing, or irresponsible. Midlife career change is rarely about dissatisfaction alone. It's often about identity, purpose, confidence, and the quiet realization that the life you built no longer fits the person you've become. This book addresses both the emotional and logistical challenges of career transition, helping readers understand why they feel stuck before showing them how to move forward. Readers are guided through:The emotional realities of career change, including fear, self-doubt, grief for the "old path," and the pressure of expectations Identifying transferable skills and experience that remain valuable-even when changing industries Clarifying values, interests, and priorities that often shift in midlife Exploring new career options realistically, without impulsive decisions or unnecessary financial risk Reframing professional identity and learning how to present experience in a new way Creating a sustainable transition plan that balances ambition with real-world responsibilities Rather than promoting drastic reinvention or unrealistic success stories, Can't I Just Want Something More?emphasizes thoughtful progress, experimentation, and self-trust. It encourages readers to take informed steps forward while honoring the experience they already bring to the table. This book is written for professionals, caregivers, creatives, and career-changers who feel called toward something different-but want guidance that respects their lived experience. It is equally useful for individuals actively planning a transition and for those still in the early stages of reflection.
