Clean Houses

THE SPANISH LANGUAGE SENSATION - NOW AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH 'Reflects on what we truly think (but almost never say) about domestic labour' Vogue 'A witty and unflinchingly honest novel on domestic work, motherhood, and class. Painfully relatable and enjoyable to read' Roxy Dunn, author of As Young as This ' Makes you laugh and feel uncomfortable in equal measure' Telva Sol has always known she has little in common with the woman she hires to clean her apartment. Sol is progressive - a feminist - and she would never dream of treating the housekeepers as cruelly as her grandmother, or as dismissively as her mother. But all the same; Sol doesn't relate to these women, and she doesn't like the conflicted feelings they bring up in her. So when Sol and her boyfriend find out they are expecting a baby, having one more cleaner to help around the house seems to make sense. But it isn't long before Sol starts to find their presence - and her own privilege - uncomfortable. Caught between needing the cleaners' help and wishing they didn't exist, Sol feels compelled to chase a respectable, creative career; the kind her family have always thought her deserving of. But secretly, what Sol really thrives at is cleaning. And what she doesn't want everyone to know is: she has started to clean other people's houses herself . . . Told in an unfiltered, hypnotic voice, Clean Houses is a sharply funny and uproarious take on privilege, class and the hypocrisies of modern domestic labour. 'Peers into what almost no one wants to see, portraying with perverse humour what nobody wants to do' El Periódico 'Portrays, with corrosive humour and sharp social critique, the invisible work of those who clean and care in our homes' Informativos TVE 'An uncomfortable novel - but in the best sense of the word. It forces the reader to look into a mirror they'd rather avoid' La Voz de Galicia 'Suffused with sharpness and a dose of humour . . . Like a sociological study in a literary key; a lens that focuses on the contradictions of being a woman' Euronews 'A fresh, refreshingly honest voice that drew several wicked laughs from me' Julia Viejo
