ROBERT MCNAMARA, COCOYOC-DECLARATION: The problem today is not primarily one of absolute physical shortage but of economic and social MALDISTRIBUTION AND MISUSE. ∆ At the same time, the very cheapness of the materials was one element in encouraging the industrialized nations to indulge in careless and extravagant use of the imported materials. ∆ Nothing could illustrate more clearly the degree to which the world market system which has continuously operated to increase the power and wealth of the rich and maintain the relative deprivation of the poor is rooted not in unchangeable physical circumstance but in political relationships. ∆ – EDMOND CAHN, CONFRONTING INJUSTICE: It amounted to mere shift on words ∆ “Did the accused PUBLISH this libel?” ∆ Did the accused publish this LIBEL?” …What do the “ink-eradicators” say about the First Amendment? The Amendment itself is couched in what the rest of us might consider rather direct terms. It provides that “Congress shall make no law” on certain subjects that the Founding Fathes considered sacred and indispensable to human dingity. Although the Amendment say precisely that “Congress shall make no law” in these fields the “ink-readicators” claim that it means something quite different. They claim that when it says “Congress shall make no law”; it means “Congress shall make no unreasonable law.” – VANCE PACKARD, THE NAKED SOCIETY: Many of the PRESENT INVASIONS OF OUR PRIVACY ORIGINATE IN THE KINDS OF LIFE THE CITIZENS HAVEN CHOSEN TO PURSUE. ∆ It may seem odd that affluence should undermine privacy. ∆ Consider the problem of launching and moving goods in today’s superabundant economy. ∆ A growth in population and a growth in temptation in a nation increasingly swollen with material goods could help to account for much of the increase in crime. ∆ Our Urban living has played a part in making citizens more fearful of being beset by criminals.
