First Principles

First Principles is Herbert Spencer's ambitious prolegomenon to his "Synthetic Philosophy," an attempt to organize all knowledge under a single evolutionary law. Moving from metaphysics to cosmology, biology, psychology, and sociology, the book argues that reality proceeds from the homogeneous to the heterogeneous through the persistence of force. Its style is austere, architectonic, and resolutely Victorian: abstract, classificatory, and confident in the explanatory power of science. It also occupies a crucial literary-intellectual context, seeking to reconcile religion and science by defining the ultimate ground of existence as "the Unknowable." Spencer, one of the most influential English thinkers of the nineteenth century, was largely self-educated and formed by engineering, journalism, liberal individualism, and the rapid expansion of scientific discovery. Writing in the wake of Lyell and Darwin, he sought not merely to interpret evolution biologically but to elevate it into a universal principle governing mind, society, and the cosmos. First Principles reflects both his breadth and his age's hunger for systematic order. This book is recommended to readers interested in Victorian thought, intellectual history, philosophy of science, or the genealogy of evolutionary ideas. Though some claims now appear dated, its conceptual audacity and historical importance remain undeniable.
