German for Absolute Beginners: The Complete A1 Course

Hand plus shoe equals glove. Handschuh. German looks intimidating until someone shows you that the famously long words are just short words stacked together. This is a complete beginner's course in German, taught in English across ten lessons and a little over three hours. You start with Hallo and you finish able to introduce yourself properly: your name, your age, where you come from, where you live, what you do for a living, what you enjoy doing and how often you do it. Along the way you learn to count to a hundred, to tell the time on both the twenty-four-hour clock and the informal one, to conjugate regular verbs and the irregular sein and haben, to handle der, die and das, to build German plurals, and to describe things with adjectives and colours. You also learn when to say du and when to say Sie – the distinction that trips up almost every English speaker. Every new phrase comes with pauses to repeat out loud. Every lesson ends with exercises and spoken solutions, so you always know whether you got it right before moving on. Nadine Nienhaus is a native German speaker from Munich who has been teaching languages since 2012. She explains in plain English, keeps the pace calm, and never leaves you guessing what a word means. No textbook required. Just listen, repeat, and answer.
