Glasgow's Hidden Walks

Glasgow is a fascinating city with a history that extends from humble medieval origins to become the 'Second City of Empire' in the Victorian era. This book explores beyond the city centre, venturing into areas like the Gorbals and Govanhill that rarely make it onto the radar of visitors or indeed many Glaswegians. Along the way you will visit abandoned railway stations, vibrant community gardens, a stretch of the mythical Molendinar Burn, and learn about old shipbuilding yards, infamous murders, and how local activists saved many tenement streets. Glasgow has long been a place that has attracted immigrants and you will discover how they have shaped the character of the city as it is today. The city is also famed for its architecture and there is a walk dedicated to some of the great Glaswegian architects from the world renowned Charles Rennie Mackintosh to lesser-know names such as James Miller and 'Greek' Thompson. Along the way you will discover pubs that are at the heart of their community, and also find out about Miss Cranston and her famous tea rooms.
