Iconic Albums Genesis The Foxtrot Era (1972)

The album where Genesis truly became Genesis. Released in 1972, Foxtrot was the moment Genesis stepped fully into their own strange, theatrical, and ambitious world. Building on the promise of Trespass and Nursery Cryme, the classic line-up of Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins created an album that was darker, grander, stranger, and more confident than anything they had attempted before. From the monumental Mellotron opening of "Watcher of the Skies" to the apocalyptic majesty of "Supper's Ready," Foxtrot remains one of the defining statements of progressive rock. It is an album of cosmic loneliness, lost history, dystopian satire, mythic coastlines, pastoral beauty, surreal humour, spiritual ambiguity, and final revelation. This book takes a deep dive into the world of Foxtrot, exploring how Genesis sharpened the ideas of Nursery Cryme and prepared the way for the refined brilliance of Selling England by the Pound. It examines the making of the album, the role of each band member, the symbolism of Paul Whitehead's famous cover artwork, Peter Gabriel's legendary fox-head stage persona, and the live performances that helped transform Genesis from a cult progressive band into a theatrical phenomenon. At the centre of the book is a detailed exploration of "Supper's Ready," one of the most ambitious pieces in rock history. Each section is examined in depth, from the intimate mystery of "Lover's Leap" to the grotesque madness of "Willow Farm," the rhythmic terror of "Apocalypse in 9/8," and the triumphant final release of "As Sure as Eggs Is Eggs." Iconic Albums: Genesis - Foxtrot is a celebration of a record that remains strange, flawed, magnificent, and essential. It is the story of an album where English eccentricity met apocalypse, where progressive rock became theatre, and where Genesis found the sound that would make them legends. For fans of Genesis, Peter Gabriel, classic progressive rock, and the golden age of ambitious album-making, this is the story of Foxtrot - the album that opened the sky, summoned the fox, and made the supper ready.
