In the Shadow of Tradition: What No One Explained to Us

Why does God allow suffering? What happens when a person dies? Can we truly hope to see our loved ones again? And how did religious traditions about hell, saints, Mary, images, and the afterlife become so deeply rooted? In the Shadow of Tradition examines these questions with compassion, clarity, and respect for the reader. Drawing on biblical accounts, historical developments, and the experiences of people who endured grief, injustice, illness, and loss, Alfred Grasmück distinguishes between what the Bible actually teaches and what later traditions added. The book follows the biblical story from Eden through Job, Hagar, Elijah, Jesus, and the early Christians. It explores the resurrection hope, the meaning of Gehenna and the lake of fire, the origin of religious images and saint veneration, and the question of who will live in heaven and who may enjoy everlasting life on earth. This is not a book of abstract theology. It is written for ordinary people who want understandable answers, comfort in times of grief, and a faith based on careful examination rather than inherited assumptions. It invites readers to step out of the shadow of tradition and examine the light of the Bible for themselves.
