Johann Fischart: Sämtliche Werke / Band IX, 1: De Magorvm Daemonomania Edition v

Jean Bodin’s ›Démonomanie des sorciers‹ (1580) discusses legal and theological positions on crimen magiae, recommends simplified proceedings and attacks the opponents of witch-hunting as well as attempts to legitimise ›magic‹. The German translation by the studied lawyer Johann Fischart (›De Magorum Daemonomania‹; first 1581) supplements the text in many ways with references to German conditions. It is part of his demonological oeuvre, which also includes a new edition of the ›Hexenhammer‹. This edition makes the text, which has been published in several versions, available for the first time in a critical form and offers a reliable textual basis for historical and literary studies.
