Makoto 102

Makoto Japanese Language & Culture Magazine — Issue 102 (August 2026) Story-driven reading and listening practice for learners of Japanese Makoto is a monthly digital magazine for beginner to intermediate learners of Japanese. Each issue blends short stories, language lessons, cultural notes, humor, and native-audio recordings — all designed to make Japanese feel natural, usable, and enjoyable. In this issue: Issue 102 begins a five-part run through 「赤い蝋燭と人魚」; Ogawa Mimei's 1921 fairy tale — the actual words Japanese readers have grown up on for a century, not a retelling and not smoothed out for a textbook. Around it, the rest of the issue leans summer and a little short-tempered: fireworks in the haiku spotlight, three ways to be angry in the onomatopoeia lesson, and an etymology piece that traces お転婆 (tomboy) back to a Dutch word for "untamable." Three readers: 熊やイノシシに遭ってしまったら (If You Run Into a Bear or a Boar) — Bears and wild boar are turning up in neighborhoods, and the advice is simple: don't shout, back away, leave quietly. Gentle N5 story in hiragana-spaced and kanji+furigana formats. Frank & The Obaasan, E10 「皇帝たちの帰還」 — Two emperors turn up at the door, bow deeply to the obaasan, and won't give Frank so much as a nod. Their spaceship has been impounded, they need a guide to Earth, and the Obaasan has house rules. With grammar and vocabulary support plus a Japanese-only reading. 赤い蝋燭と人魚 (The Red Candles and the Mermaid), Part 1 — A lonely mermaid in the cold northern sea, expecting a child, decides the kindest thing she can do is give her baby to the humans on shore, because humans, she's heard, are gentle to helpless things. Full guided reader with vocabulary, grammar notes, audio, and older literary forms explained as they appear. Also inside: Etymology (お転婆); anger onomatopoeia (イライラ・カンカン・ムカムカ); Haiku Spotlight (花火消え 闇の深さを 知りにけり); Grammar Time (〜なければならない / 〜わけにはいかない); Vocabulary N5–N1 (お元気ですか・楽しみにする・手が離せない・顔が広い・気を揉む); Kanji Spotlight (水・図・配・傾・把; one per level), Prefecture Spotlight (島根); an Anime Phrase from 『黄泉のつがい』; plus Jokes & Riddles and Katakana Match. Includes: 101 pages (PDF), native audio for every story and example sentence, pre-built Anki decks, PDF + EPUB editions, scan-and-listen QR codes, and full Makoto+ Sentence Explorer integration for interactive reading, furigana-on-demand, and vocabulary tracking. Japanese that feels human, readable, and fun — whether you're backing away from a boar, watching two emperors lose a staring contest with the Obaasan, or following a mermaid toward the lights of a town she'll never enter.
