Praeludien und Fugen, Opus 56

Making the artistic leap from 'Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier' via Beethoven, Liszt and Wagner, the nine preludes and fugues of Salomon Jadassohn set a new benchmark for the form at a time when the Romantic piano was soaring to new technical heights and simultaneously plumbing new depths of sentimentality. Technically rigorous and yet emotionally disciplined, the composer takes the performer on a sublime journey far removed from mere affectation towards an almost transcendental state of pure musical being.
