"Sand and Foam This book is a collection of philosophical reflections by Kahlil Gibran on various topics, translated from English into Arabic. It comprises a collection of philosophical musings and aphorisms that Gibran wrote randomly and scattered across a number of scraps of paper. He wrote them in various places, in addition to his comments on his drawings. It was his friend, Barbara Young, who recognized their value and asked him to compile them into a book. Gibran's initial reaction was to tell her, ""It's nothing but sand and foam,"" but he agreed to her idea, and together they began compiling it. When they finished, Gibran told her, ""This little book is no more than a handful of sand and a fistful of foam. Between the wings of every man and every woman is some sand and some foam. Some of us reveal what lies between our wings, and some of us hide it out of shame. I am not ashamed, so please excuse me."" The book was first published in English in late 1926, following and serving as a continuation of *The Prophet*, and as a prelude to his later work, *The Garden of the Prophet*. It was later translated into Arabic by Antonius Bashir. The book's language has been described as rhetorical, rich with similes and vivid imagery. The reader feels that Gibran was painting his words and telling his stories with a mystical, ascetic tone, reflecting a detachment from worldly life. *Sand and Foam* includes over 300 aphorisms and stories with which Gibran begins the book, along with illustrations that complement the meanings of his words."
