In the night from February 28 to March 1, 1990, Storm Wiebke passed over Europe with violent gusts of wind. Roofs were covered and numerous trees buckled like matches. Railways and roads had to be closed. The wind was so strong that I feared that the roof of our house could be torn off completely by the hurricane. Thank goodness the anchorage withstood the hurricane. This hurricane was preceded by the storms Daria, Herta, Judit, Nana, Ottilie, Polly and Vivian. Radio stations reported wind speeds of 285 km / h and 60 to 70 million cubic meters of storm wood that had to be removed. The storm wind Wiebke hit our northern Steigerwald particularly hard. The damage caused to forestry was enormous. After the storm had subsided, countless beeches and oaks lay across each other in our area of the Steigerwald. The foresters and forest workers of the local forestry office could not clean up the amount of fallen trees on their own. Our forester Jakob Beer from the Oberschwappach forestry department was therefore happy about every hand that helped to get the fallen wood out of the forest. Jakob Beer has been our contact for logging issues for years. When I got into the forester's office, the troubled forester looked at me somehow overworked and stressed and the expression on his face told me that when I came he had a plan for me in his head.
