Ten Days in a Mad-House; or, Nellie Bly's Experience on Blackwell's Island

"Ten Days in a Mad-House" is a pioneering exposé by the intrepid journalist Nellie Bly, who feigned insanity to be committed to the notorious Blackwell's Island Insane Asylum in 1887. Her undercover work, presented in this detailed account, revealed the harrowing conditions, abuse, and neglect faced by the patients within. Bly's brave investigative journalism not only brought national attention to the maltreatment of the mentally ill but also sparked reforms in mental health care facilities. Through her vivid and empathetic writing, Bly presents a powerful critique of societal attitudes towards mental illness in the late 19th century, making this work a testament to the impact of investigative journalism and the necessity for continual oversight in institutions.
