The Autobiography of Madame Guyon

The Autobiography of Madame Guyon is a searching spiritual memoir that traces Jeanne Guyon's passage through childhood piety, marriage, widowhood, mystical illumination, controversy, and confinement. Written in a direct yet intensely inward style, it belongs to the tradition of Christian confessional literature while reflecting the tensions of seventeenth-century French Catholicism. Its central themes-self-abandonment, divine love, suffering, and the "prayer of quiet"-place it at the heart of debates over mysticism and Quietism. Jeanne Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon (1648-1717) was a French aristocratic widow whose religious writings and teaching brought her both devoted followers and powerful opponents. Her experiences of illness, domestic unhappiness, maternal loss, and institutional suspicion deeply shaped her theology of surrender to God. Associated with François Fénelon and opposed by Bossuet, she endured interrogations and imprisonment, circumstances that give the autobiography its urgency and apologetic force. This book is recommended to readers of spiritual autobiography, early modern religious history, and women's writing. It offers not only a record of mystical experience but also a rare female voice negotiating authority, conscience, and persecution.
