The Clean Decision

Most people assume their worst decisions come from lack of information. Ezra Tovell argues the opposite: the real danger lies in the hidden architecture of a mind that feels trustworthy precisely when it is most likely to fail. The Clean Decision is a rigorous, readable guide to the mental traps that quietly sabotage judgment — in business, medicine, politics, relationships, and everyday life. Drawing on decades of research in behavioral economics, cognitive psychology, and decision theory, Tovell maps the full landscape of human bias: why we see patterns that aren't there, misremember our own past, defer to authority when we shouldn't, mistake emotional certainty for factual truth, and keep investing in failures because stopping feels worse than continuing. Each chapter takes a different class of error — from overconfidence and sunk costs to loss aversion, groupthink, anchoring, and the seductive power of free, new, and scarce — and traces it through real cases that reshaped institutions and history: NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter, Kodak's slow surrender to digital photography, the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Challenger disaster, wrongful convictions built on sincere but false eyewitness testimony, and financial crises amplified by the illusion of control.Tovell introduces a core insight that runs beneath all the chapters: roughly ten foundational decisions — whom to build a life with, how to earn a living, where to live, whom to allow influence — determine 80 to 90 percent of a life's trajectory. The Clean Decision teaches readers to identify which decisions actually matter, and to bring the right tools to bear on them.
