The Collected Works (Annotated)

Josephine Tey's The Collected Works gathers the elegant, psychologically acute fiction of one of Britain's most distinctive Golden Age crime writers. Moving beyond mere puzzle-making, these novels and stories explore identity, evidence, social performance, and the treacherous authority of appearances. From the historical revisionism of The Daughter of Time to the moral ambiguity of The Franchise Affair and the uncanny substitutions of Brat Farrar, Tey's prose is lucid, urbane, and quietly subversive, placing her beside yet apart from Christie, Sayers, and Allingham. Born Elizabeth MacKintosh in Inverness in 1896, Tey also wrote successful plays under the name Gordon Daviot, a theatrical discipline evident in her sharp dialogue, poised scenes, and fascination with role-playing. Her Scottish upbringing, teaching background, and experience in the literary theatre helped form a writer attentive to class, reputation, and the narratives by which societies judge guilt and innocence. This collection is recommended to readers who value crime fiction as literature: intellectually exacting, humane, and stylistically refined.
