The Good Friday Battle

April 2, 2010. A day that changed the German military forever. In the dust of northern Afghanistan's Chahar Dara district, what began as a routine patrol quickly turned into a nightmare. Ambushed by a large, coordinated Taliban force, a small unit of German soldiers found themselves pinned down in open terrain, outnumbered and fighting for their lives in the deadliest engagement involving German troops since World War II. The Good Friday Battle is a gripping, minute-by-minute account of that harrowing day. It is a story of courage under fire, the chaos and uncertainty of combat, and an extraordinary bond forged between allies. As German forces struggled against restrictive rules of engagement and dwindling support, their survival came to depend on a handful of daring U.S. Army MEDEVAC pilots. Flying Black Hawks through intense enemy fire, these American crews risked everything to rescue their wounded German allies, transforming a desperate withdrawal into a legendary display of skill and valor. Drawing on extensive research and firsthand accounts, veteran and historian Dr. Wolf Gregis reveals the brutal realities faced by German soldiers in Afghanistan while honoring the courage and sacrifice of all who fought. More than a military history, The Good Friday Battle is a searing demand for recognition for a generation of veterans long forgotten in Germany.
