The Hidden Scripts

Every conversation, meeting, family dinner, and friendship operates on two levels at once. On the surface: the words, the agenda, the official story. Underneath: a faster, mostly unspoken negotiation about power, status, belonging, and survival. Most people spend their entire lives playing the surface game — and are perpetually surprised when it produces no results. Because the result is always decided by the deep game.In The Hidden Scripts: The Games Nobody Names, writer and organizational consultant Mateo Salvas draws on more than a decade of field research — inside corporations, consulting rooms, families, and political circles across multiple countries — to map the invisible rules that govern how people actually relate to one another. Synthesizing insights from social psychology, transactional analysis, family systems theory, evolutionary anthropology, and behavioral neuroscience, Salvas builds a comprehensive and immediately practical guide to decoding the hidden transactions shaping every aspect of human life.Readers will learn to see the three internal voices — Parent, Adult, and Child — that compete for control in any conversation, and why the wrong one so often wins. They will understand why crossed transactions derail even well-intentioned exchanges, and why people repeat painful relational patterns despite fully understanding them. From the dynamics of the workplace meeting that is really a permission theater, to the friendship group quietly restructuring around a new romantic couple, to the therapy session where the patient is successfully performing recovery without changing at all — Salvas decodes these scripts with precision, compassion, and unflinching honesty.Central to the book is the Drama Triangle — the rotating cycle of Victim, Rescuer, and Persecutor — and a sustained examination of why rescue so often sustains helplessness, why persecution so often masks vulnerability, and why victimhood so often conceals power. Salvas also confronts the digital world, showing how platforms amplify ancient social scripts through intermittent reinforcement, context collapse, and the architecture of public performance. But The Hidden Scripts is not merely a manual for detecting manipulation. Its deeper argument is that awareness of the game is the beginning of something richer: genuine contact, free of management and payoff, in which two people meet without a script between them. Combining six fully decoded real-world case studies with a final toolkit of practical interruption strategies, Salvas shows not only how hidden games can be recognized, but how — slowly, imperfectly, and with real courage — they can be refused. For readers of Robert Greene and Daniel Goleman, The Hidden Scripts is an essential guide for anyone who has ever felt that something important was happening beneath a conversation they could not quite name.
