The History of Witchcraft and Demonology

The Masterpiece of Darker Erudition Montague Summers's The History of Witchcraft and Demonology remains the definitive, unvarnished English-speaking account of the witch phenomenon. First published in 1926, this monumental work is not a mere detached chronicle, but an immersive encounter with the history of the black arts-offering one of the most comprehensive and atmospheric studies of witchcraft ever penned. Summers's singular achievement lies in his exhaustive command of primary sources, marrying rigorous archival scholarship with an unyielding exploration of the witch-cult. He tracks the figure of the witch with seamless erudition, moving from medieval papal bulls and classical antiquity to the celebrated trial records of early modern Europe, and finally to the corollary practices of demonology, possession, and spiritism. By treating the logic of the invisible world not as a historical curiosity, but as a potent and persistent reality, Summers reconstructs the fears of the past with terrifying fidelity. For the modern reader, the text offers a rare perspective: the ability to inhabit the mental architecture of a world that genuinely believed in the reality of witchcraft, rendered in a prose style that carries the rhythmic weight of the pulpit and the haunting cadence of a ghost story. This definitive edition has been meticulously typeset and restored for the discerning collector. Featuring period-accurate interior ornamentation and two striking color plates, the volume is designed to be experienced as Summers intended-by fireside, as a gateway into the darkest intellectual and spiritual mysteries of human history. For the occult scholar, the literary historian, and the bibliophile, this remains the essential volume on the history, gravity, and substance of witchcraft.
