The Italian Army in the Battle for Sicily

Italian units faced inadequate weaponry yet mounted tenacious resistance in Sicily, honoring soldiers who defended their homeland despite being forgotten by commanders and historiography. The Italian Army in the Battle for Sicily, July-August 1943 offers the first modern, full-scale operational study in English of the Italian Army's role in the defence of Sicily during Operation Husky, the Allied invasion that marked the beginning of the campaign for mainland Italy. Overshadowed for decades by accounts centred on Patton, Montgomery and the German defence of the island, the Italian contribution has too often been dismissed as ineffective or characterised simply as a story of collapse. This book presents a very different picture. Drawing upon extensive Italian archival sources, official histories, wartime documentation and post-war studies, Massimiliano Afiero reconstructs the campaign from the Italian perspective while placing it firmly within the wider Allied and German operational framework. Beginning with Allied planning, Axis preparations and the complex defensive organisation of Sicily, the study follows the fighting from the landings on 10 July 1943 through the desperate counter-attacks at Gela and elsewhere, the defence of Syracuse, Augusta, Catania and Palermo, and the final withdrawal to Messina. Rather than concentrating solely on the better-known German formations, this study restores the Italian Army to the centre of the narrative. It examines the actions of regular infantry divisions, Bersaglieri, Blackshirt units, Arditi commandos, coastal formations, artillery, engineers, armoured troops and the Regia Marina, revealing numerous examples of determined resistance and local tactical success despite overwhelming Allied naval, air and material superiority. Alongside these battlefield actions, the book also explores the command decisions of Guzzoni, Ambrosio, Mussolini, Kesselring and Hube, highlighting the political, strategic and organisational problems that shaped the defence of Sicily. The campaign is analysed in exceptional operational detail, from the beaches of Gela, Licata and Pachino to the fighting around Primosole Bridge, the Catania Plain and the mountainous approaches to Messina. Individual acts of bravery are interwoven throughout the narrative, illustrating both the courage of many Italian soldiers and the increasingly desperate circumstances in which they fought as the Axis position deteriorated. Richly illustrated with contemporary photographs, detailed operational maps, specially commissioned colour artwork and vehicle profiles, the volume also examines the weapons, uniforms and equipment employed by the Italian forces, from obsolete coastal defences and Renault R35 tanks to Semovente self-propelled guns, Arditi assault units and the specialised formations defending the island. The Italian Army in the Battle for Sicily, July-August 1943 is a major reassessment of one of the pivotal campaigns of the Mediterranean War. It challenges long-standing assumptions, restores the Italian Army to its proper place in the story of Sicily, and provides essential reading for anyone interested in the Italian armed forces, the Mediterranean theatre and the Allied invasion of Europe.
