The Lustful Turk

The Lustful Turk is a notorious work of early nineteenth-century erotic fiction, cast chiefly as letters from the abducted Englishwoman Emily Barlow after her seizure by Moorish pirates and confinement in an Ottoman harem. Its prose combines epistolary immediacy, Gothic captivity motifs, and extravagant Orientalist fantasy, turning the "Turk" into a figure through whom Regency and Victorian anxieties about sexuality, empire, race, and female agency are staged. Though designed for clandestine arousal, the book also belongs to a longer tradition of harem tales, libertine fiction, and anti-Turkish romance. The author remains unknown, and that anonymity is itself revealing. Writing in a period when obscene publication could invite prosecution, the maker of The Lustful Turk drew on circulating travel literature, popular misconceptions of Islam and the Ottoman world, and the underground market for pornographic chapbooks. The result reflects less an authentic East than the fears and fantasies of a British readership negotiating repression and imperial curiosity.
