The Muslim Handbook of Etiquette and Manners

The Muslim Handbook of Etiquette and Manners is a translation of Imam al-Ghazali's Adab fi al-Din, a concise yet thorough guide to proper Islamic conduct and character in a wide range of life situations. This text outlines the essential principles of adab, or proper manners and ethics, that every Muslim should strive to embody and cultivate within his or her life, and which govern all interactions with other people and with oneself. While numerous works discuss adab, this text stands out for its comprehensive and practical approach. The book begins with a discussion of adab with Allah, as the relationship with the Creator is at the heart of a Muslim's character. Imam al-Ghazali details how one may cultivate reverence, humility, and mindfulness in this relationship, and provides practical advice regarding how to consistently remember Allah, fulfill His commands, and show patience during life's challenges. The core of the book is formatted such that one may use it as a reference text, consulting the appropriate sections depending on what scenarios arise in one's dealings with people. Imam al-Ghazali underscores the Messenger's mission to perfect noble character, drawing attention to Quranic verses and hadiths that stress the significance of good manners. Adab governs interactions with Allah, oneself, and society at large, forming the bedrock of a harmonious and spiritually fulfilling life.
