The Purpose of Life This is a relatively short book by May Ziadeh, which she wrote to deliver as a lecture to a group of Egyptian women. In it, she addresses several points with strength and insight, most importantly that happiness is everyone's goal, the importance and benefits of work, individual independence and self-reliance, and she uses examples to illustrate the power of women, both for good and ill, and what their situation would be if they had no purpose, goal, or work in life. Each of us strives in life to achieve our desired purpose and goals. We enter the arena of conflicts and wage wars to achieve this. Despite our differing motives, beliefs, and ideas, we all strive for one goal: happiness. Happiness, which people have long been deprived of, has only increased their longing for it and their determination to continue striving to achieve it. In its essence, happiness is a gradual progression towards a state where all faculties are fully realized and complete with minimal resistance and pain. The tragedy is not in not reaching this goal, but the painful difficulty is the absence of the goal. In this lecture, the writer addresses the Arab woman, experiencing her pain, and trying to prescribe the remedy for her by breathing new life into her veins, and urging her to search for her goals that she has lost and that are closer to her than anything else.
