The Sasanian Empire

The Sasanian Empire presents a learned narrative of Persia's last pre-Islamic imperial dynasty, tracing its rise under Ardashir I, its long rivalry with Rome and Byzantium, and its eventual collapse before the Arab conquests. Rawlinson writes in the grand nineteenth-century historical manner: chronological, political, and military in emphasis, yet attentive to religion, administration, court culture, and the monarchy's claims to ancient Iranian legitimacy. The work belongs to the Victorian tradition of "Oriental" historiography, shaped by classical sources, inscriptions, and comparative imperial history. George Rawlinson (1812-1902), Camden Professor of Ancient History at Oxford and brother of the Assyriologist Henry Rawlinson, was among the major English interpreters of the ancient Near East for a learned readership. His training in classics, biblical history, and early cuneiform-era scholarship encouraged him to situate Sasanian Persia within a broader continuum of Near Eastern empires, while his clerical and academic background gave his prose both moral seriousness and institutional authority. This book is recommended for readers seeking a lucid, historically significant account of Sasanian power and its place between antiquity and the medieval world. Though modern scholarship has revised many details, Rawlinson remains valuable for his synthesis, narrative command, and insight into how nineteenth-century historians understood Iran's imperial past.
