The Weaver Awakes

Penny Alexander wakes one morning to good news, and a new headache. Her editor has given her a potentially career-changing assignment, one that almost makes the early-morning interruption palatable. She'll be photographing tech magnate, Oscar Duncan, who's shaking up the world with his inventions and who has become something of an idol to her twin sister, Callie. But Penny's estranged father shows up with cryptic news about the twins' comatose mother, further straining their already tenuous financial situation, and urging Penny to begin training for a battle she cannot comprehend. Callie Alexander knows she's just one commission away from making it as a professional painter, an artform she dove into following a Dreamwalk gone horribly wrong. When her twin sister gets the assignment of a lifetime and a visit from their father in the same morning, Callie becomes both jealous and motivated to best her sister by selling her highest commission yet. She locks herself in her studio and waits for the muse to bless her brush and palette, but what arrives to guide her hands is far from inspiration and threatens to trap Callie in the very nightmare that caused, all those years ago, such profound loss. Lucien watches his now-adult daughters grow up from afar, his work taking him away for years—even decades—at a time, and begins to notice some peculiarities in their abilities. Callie, being the oldest sister, was supposed to have become the Dreamscape Priestess and had all the markings and courage needed to fulfill her role. But her twin sister, the daughter who wanted nothing to do with the magic passed down through her matriarchal line, begins exhibiting signs of Priestesshood Lucien cannot ignore. Now, he must race to repair his relationship before the fabric of the world is torn apart at the seams. Oscar Duncan operates on blind ambition and unshakable confidence and has a knack for drawing in investors to fund his pet tech projects, the latest of which he calls his Dream Machine. After several hiccups and the termination of several test subjects, Oscar is ready to introduce his machine—and its unmatched, world-rending power—to investors with promises of total control. But Oscar has a quiet obsession with the Alexander sisters and harbors a lingering desire to avenge what he believes they stole from him. Told through four perspectives across three levels of the Dreamscape, The Weaver Awakes pits money against matter, sister against sister, family against legacy, and invention against creation in this first book of The Dùsgadh series that explores family secrets, hidden legacies, and what it means to be truly free.
