Training The Flying Changes

Training the Flying Changes A Step-by-Step Guide for Any Horse or Rider The flying change is one of dressage's most admired movements-and one of its most misunderstood. Riders often struggle with late changes, crookedness, tension, anticipation, or horses that simply refuse to change leads. The solution is rarely stronger aids. It lies in better preparation. In this practical, highly illustrated guide, renowned classical trainer Dr. Thomas Ritter, together with Shana Ritter, presents a clear, systematic approach that develops flying changes through correct biomechanics, progressive gymnastic exercises, and thoughtful communication with the horse. Instead of relying on repetition or force, the Ritters show how to build the balance, straightness, coordination, and understanding that allow clean, confident flying changes to emerge naturally. Inside you'll discover:Twelve proven training pathways to successful flying changes Progressive exercises from walk through canter Rider position, timing, and effective aids explained in detail Solutions for common problems, including late behind, anticipation, tension, and resistance Methods suitable for young horses, green horses, retraining projects, and experienced competition horses Clear explanations of the biomechanics that make flying changes easier to understand and teach Whether you're schooling your first flying change, improving one-tempis, preparing for Third Level and FEI work, or simply seeking a more classical and horse-friendly training system, this book provides a logical roadmap that you can return to throughout your riding career. Richly illustrated with diagrams and practical exercises, Training the Flying Changes is an indispensable resource for dressage riders, trainers, instructors, clinicians, and serious students of classical horsemanship who want reliable flying changes built on understanding rather than chance.
