Wartime for the Mill Girls

West Yorkshire 1939 When the world goes to war, a workforce of women must take the strain. As the storm clouds of the Second World War gather over Huddersfield, Briony and Jan Van Leyden are at the helm of Lockwood Mill. With government contracts demanding endless khaki cloth for uniforms, the mill pushes production to its limits as the close-knit community waves their husbands and sons off to fight. Young weaver Jessie Booth lives in fear of receiving a telegram with news of her beloved husband Terry, fighting in the bleak fields of France. Determined to be brave, she blossoms in her role in the Women's Voluntary Services and finds a new talent, documenting the grit of the women keeping the war effort and country afloat. Meanwhile, the Van Leydens' own children are drawn into the fray: Paul taking to the skies as an RAF pilot, and his sister, Ruth, embarking on perilous, top-secret work in London and across the Channel in occupied France. Can the women of Lockwood Mill weather these darkest days, or will the ravages of war destroy everything they hold dear? An unputdownable, emotional new wartime saga series perfect for fans of Fenella Miller, Daisy Goodwin and Daisy Styles. Authors love Chrissie Walsh: 'Full of joy, sorrow and a big pinch of fun.
