William Stanek's The Living Canyonlands Biography

Canyonlands was made by separation. The Colorado and Green rivers cut through layered stone, dividing mesas, canyons, needles, benches, walls, and remote basins into a landscape whose complexity increases the closer one looks.William Stanek's The Living Canyonlands Biography follows ancient environments, uplift, rivers, erosion, desert ecology, Indigenous homelands, exploration, ranching, prospecting, roads, preservation, recreation, and the continuing meaning of remoteness. The park appears empty from high overlooks. Its biography reveals a country crossed, used, named, worked, contested, and protected. This is Canyonlands as a desert labyrinth-not because it is unknowable, but because water and stone have created a geography that continually divides one world from the next.
