Zwölf Leben

A monograph showcasing Florian Germann's sculpture and installation works, where organic, technical, and environmental elements converge. Florian Germann's works of sculpture and installation art straddle the divisions between organic body, technical apparatus, and living environment, probing the entanglements between human, animal, and machine. Materials serve him as carriers of energy, forming hybrid structures that feel at once familiar and alien. Some works take on a life of their own as plants, insects, or birds colonize them. Turning into dynamic systems in which change and interaction are central, they appear to the eye as sensitive apparatuses that channel energies and establish interrelationships. The monograph Florian German: Zwölf Leben charts the multifaceted oeuvre that Germann has built over two decades. Rather than retracing a linear narrative, it envisions the work as an open ensemble of cyclical transformations. Recurring motifs such as animals, habitats, models, or experimental technical arrangements become legible as interconnected thematic fields in which areas of heightened density, displacements, and feedbacks emerge. Two essays by Raphael Gygax and Stefanie Gschwend, a conversation with the artist, and carefully composed image spreads interweave a delineation of Germann's place in art history with insights into his practice to mark a point of reference in the contemporary discourse.
