Editor Maria Traoré is a translator and teacher of German, French and English from Ukraine who collaborates with the ProMosaik Children project. She publishes children’s books to promote intercultural dialogue. In this second book about Moroccan folktales, she introduces a world of fairytales which includes a mosaic of Amazigh, Arabic, and Jewish cultural traditions. In many Moroccan folktales you can find mythological creatures like jinn. The most prominent of them is the King of jinn, Shamharush, who teaches children caution. The “Enchantress Spirit of Moroccan Rivers” is focused on Aisha Kandicha, a legendary water spirit and jinn in Moroccan folklore who is said to lure lone men near rivers and waterways at night, while “The Tailor of Marrakesh” highlights the triumph of quiet wisdom and integrity over political corruption. “The forgotten prince of Rabat” talks about exile and identity by telling the story of a royal figure separated from his crown and then coming back after demonstrating resilience and struggle.
