The Revolt of the Masses

The Revolt of the Masses is Ortega y Gasset's penetrating diagnosis of modern European civilization, written in the aftermath of liberalism's triumphs and amid the political convulsions of the early twentieth century. Its central figure, the "mass man," is not simply the common citizen but the complacent product of abundance, specialization, and inherited freedoms. Aphoristic, urgent, and philosophically elegant, the book stands between cultural criticism, political theory, and existential reflection. José Ortega y Gasset, Spain's foremost modern philosopher, was shaped by German idealism, phenomenology, and the crisis of Spanish national identity after 1898. As a public intellectual, professor, and essayist, he sought to renew European thought by insisting that human life is inseparable from circumstance. His anxiety over technocracy, nationalism, and intellectual mediocrity informs the book's critique of democratic modernity. This work is essential for readers interested in the fate of liberal civilization, the psychology of crowds, and the responsibilities of cultural elites. Though controversial in its assumptions, it remains a provocative and remarkably prescient invitation to examine freedom, authority, and the fragile conditions that sustain civilized life.
