William Stanek's Colorado & the Central Rockies

Colorado changes altitude faster than a traveler's expectations can adjust.Alpine tundra, continental divide, deep canyon, enormous dunes, dry plateau, ancient human landscapes, mountain towns, snow, sun, and long scenic roads occupy the same state without belonging to the same kind of day.William Stanek's Colorado & the Central Rockies turns that contrast into the organizing intelligence of the journey.Rocky Mountain may ask for altitude restraint. Great Sand Dunes changes footing and exposure. Black Canyon compresses depth. Mesa and plateau country adds another geography entirely. The roads among them consume real time and move through landscapes that deserve more than the name "transfer day."For families, couples, solo travelers, photographers, walkers, and road travelers, this is a guide to choosing among Colorado's different mountain and high-desert worlds rather than trying to compress them into one grand loop. The Rockies become larger when the itinerary becomes more honest.
