Cash Flow First

Most small business owners watch their revenue grow and wonder why they still can't make payroll. The answer isn't a lack of sales, smarts, or effort. It's that profitable businesses run out of cash every day—and almost no one teaches owners how to stop it.In Cash Flow First: Put Your Business Under Control, consultant and former COO Brennan Renvik delivers a practical, behavioral cash management system built for the realities of running a small business. At its core is a five-account structure—Income, Profit, Owner's Pay, Tax, and Operating Expenses—that replaces the dangerous illusion of a single checking account with five clearly labeled pools of money, each with a defined purpose and a protected boundary. The system works not because it demands more discipline, but because it redesigns the financial environment so that good decisions happen automatically. Drawing on behavioral economics research by Richard Thaler, David Laibson, and Cass Sunstein, Renvik shows why willpower alone always loses to present bias, mental accounting errors, and Parkinson's Law—and how a simple structural change makes the right choice the default.Through the story of Marcus, a landscaping contractor who was profitable on paper and perpetually broke in practice, Renvik walks readers through every stage of the system: opening the accounts, setting allocation percentages, reading real cash numbers instead of accounting fictions, paying themselves without guilt, taming operating expenses through forced scarcity, managing debt while still taking profit, and building personal wealth beyond the business.Additional chapters adapt the system for solopreneurs, freelancers, agencies, retailers, and service firms, and show how to handle the breakdowns, growth surges, and team dynamics that every business owner eventually faces. The book closes with a ten-year wealth-building framework that turns consistent profit distributions into lasting financial independence outside the company.Cash Flow First is not a theory book. It is a step-by-step operating manual for any owner who is tired of working hard, watching revenue climb, and still ending every month wondering where the money went. If you have ever paid taxes late, skipped your own paycheck, or stared at a healthy P&L while your bank account said otherwise, this book was written for you.
