One Move

Most people are not failing because they are lazy. They are failing because their effort is scattered. In a world of Slack threads, overflowing inboxes, and back-to-back meetings, the greatest threat to meaningful progress is not a shortage of time or talent — it is the absence of focus. In One Move: Focus for People Juggling Thirty Tasks, operational strategist and former COO Brennan Renvik delivers a rigorous, research-backed guide to a deceptively simple idea: at any given moment, there is one action that matters more than all the others. Find it, protect it, and do it first. Everything else follows.Drawing on cognitive science, behavioral research, and hard-won experience leading distributed organizations of hundreds of people, Renvik dismantles the myth of the multitasker, shows why ordinary effort reliably produces ordinary results, and introduces the "Single Action Method" — a practical system for identifying and executing the one move with the greatest downstream impact.Readers will learn how to:- Use the Focusing Question as a daily compass to cut through noise and commit to what matters most- Apply backward planning to turn abstract goals into specific actions they can take today- Build a focus habit that runs on autopilot before willpower gets a chance to fail- Use time blocking not as a scheduling trick but as an act of self-respect- Manage energy — sleep, nutrition, and recovery — as the true foundation of deep cognitive work- Defend their focus blocks from interruptions, requests, and the guilt of being temporarily unavailable- Identify accountability partners and allies who raise the standard of what feels normal and possible- Reset quickly after inevitable periods of drift without shame or self-sabotage- Design a life around what genuinely matters, not just what is loudestRenvik draws on the work of Anders Ericsson, Peter Drucker, Peter Gollwitzer, Gloria Mark, Katy Milkman, and others to build a coherent, actionable framework. Case studies of real individuals — a stalled salesperson, an overwhelmed product manager, a solo business owner, a litigation attorney, a medical resident — show what the principles look like when applied to messy, real-life conditions. One Move is not a time management book. It is a precision tool for anyone who is already working hard but suspects that hard work alone is not enough. Whether you lead a team, run a company, or simply feel buried under the demands of modern life, this book offers a clear and honest answer to the question that determines everything: what is the one thing that, if done today, would make everything else easier or unnecessary? For readers of David Allen and Brian Tracy, One Move offers a sharper, more demanding challenge: stop optimizing everything and start choosing.
