Money on Autopilot

Most people know the basics of good personal finance: save consistently, invest early, avoid high-interest debt. The problem is not knowledge — it is execution. Life gets busy, motivation fades, and good intentions quietly dissolve. Money on Autopilot offers a different approach: instead of relying on discipline and willpower, build a simple, automated financial system that does the work for you.Drawing on behavioral economics, cognitive psychology, and decades of evidence-based personal finance research, Brennan Renvik shows that wealth is built not through brilliance or perfect timing, but through the quiet power of compound interest applied consistently over long periods. The single most important financial variable is time — and since no one ever truly feels ready, the best move is to start now.The book walks readers through a practical six-week setup that transforms financial life from a source of anxiety into a reliable, mostly self-running system. Readers learn how to choose a bank that works for them instead of quietly extracting fees, how to build a spending plan that reflects real human psychology rather than demanding constant self-denial, and how to invest simply and effectively without a finance degree. The answer for most people is the same: low-cost, broad-market index funds, automated contributions, and the patience to leave the system alone.Beyond the mechanics, Money on Autopilot addresses the invisible forces that sabotage even well-intentioned financial plans. Hidden money scripts inherited from childhood, loss aversion, present bias, social comparison, and the emotional weight of major life purchases all shape financial behavior in ways that spreadsheets alone cannot fix. Understanding these forces — and designing systems that reduce their power — is what separates people who build lasting wealth from those who repeatedly intend to.The book also covers the financial conversations most people avoid: negotiating salary, discussing money with partners and parents, handling windfalls and side income, managing credit strategically, surviving recessions and layoffs without panic-selling, and navigating the paperwork of adult financial life — taxes, insurance, beneficiary designations, and basic estate documents. In the final chapter, Renvik asks the harder question: once the system is running, what is the money actually for? A well-designed financial life is not about accumulating as much as possible and deferring joy indefinitely. It is about building a system sturdy enough to fade into the background, removing money as a constant source of fear and friction so that life can be lived deliberately.Money on Autopilot is for anyone who feels behind, overwhelmed, or stuck — and who is ready to stop waiting to feel ready.
